Baixue Shi, born on the fifth day of the fifth month in the year of Yimao (June 12, 1915) in Beijing, was also known by the studio name Hexu Studio. He studied painting from a young age, initially under Zhao Mengzhu, and later under Liang Shunian. He passed away on the nineteenth day of the third month in the year of Xinyou (April 22, 2011).

Baixue Shi's landscape paintings are based on the Northern School, with influences from the Southern School, extensively drawing from and incorporating the essence of various painting styles. They embody the rigor of Song paintings, the lightness of Yuan paintings, the grace of watercolor, and the purity and brightness of prints, enriched with decorative beauty. Utilizing various ink techniques—dense, light, dry, wet, splashed, and broken—along with different brush methods of outlining, shading, and dotting, he skillfully captures the subtle changes of light and shadow in the Li River under different weather conditions—sunny, cloudy, rainy, and foggy.

He has traveled extensively to famous mountains and rivers, including Huangshan, Taishan, the Three Gorges, and Taihang. By applying traditional techniques and modern composition methods, he has created a unique style known as the Baixue School of landscape painting. Especially since 1972, he has made numerous trips to Guilin, walking along both banks of the Li River to sketch and gather materials. Through prolonged deliberation and refinement, he has produced unparalleled landscape paintings of the Li River, vividly showcasing the enchanting scenery of Guilin.

Baixue Shi excels in painting landscapes, bringing the scenes of Huangshan, Taishan, and Guilin to life with his brush. He skillfully uses stone lines, flowers, and foliage, with rich yet clear ink to capture the pure and bright essence of green mountains and clear waters. His works are fresh and elegant, simple yet graceful, covering a wide range of subjects and exuding a strong sense of the times. Especially his green landscapes of Guilin most prominently display his unique style. He pioneered the Guilin landscape painting method, known as the "Baixue School of Landscape." The art world and various circles both domestically and internationally praise him, saying, "Guilin's landscapes are the best under heaven, and the Baixue School of Landscape is the best in Guilin."

In his early years, Baixue Shi studied landscape painting, emulating the Song and Yuan dynasties and following the Northern School. His painting style was clear, vigorous, and elegant, with a meticulous and clean execution. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he emphasized sketching from life, immersing himself in nature to reflect real life. He often took students to the mountains for sketching trips, where teaching and learning benefited mutually, allowing traditional techniques to be verified and supplemented by nature. Mr. Baixue combined the simplified methods of texture strokes, dots, and ink techniques from traditional landscape painting with the vividness of nature, creating infinite variations and innovative works. Since the 1950s, he has traveled with renowned artists like Qin Zhongwen, Wu Jingting, Wu Guangyu, Liang Shunian, Zhang Anzhi, Chen Dayu, and Song Wenzhi to famous mountains and rivers for sketching and creating, broadening his horizons, maturing his artistry, and forming his personal style.

Baixue Shi's Lijiang landscapes are the most prominent achievements in the innovation of landscape painting. His works are characterized by grandeur and depth, or by grace and ethereality, or by sparse and misty charm. He skillfully uses various ink techniques—dense, light, dry, wet, splashed, and broken—and different brush methods—strokes, texture strokes, dots, and washes—to vividly depict the subtle changes in Lijiang’s landscapes under different conditions of clear skies, clouds, rain, and mist. The composition and layout, the balance of complexity and simplicity, the interplay of void and solid, and the hierarchy of elements are all handled with meticulous care yet appear natural and stable, without any signs of artificiality. With bold and vigorous brushstrokes and rich ink layers, he portrays the reflections of strange peaks, bamboo forests, farmhouses, fishing boats in mist and rain, and banana groves, creating a captivating picture with rich layers and deep space.

Through continuous accumulation and innovation, Baixue Shi eventually broke free from old conventions and entered his realm of artistic freedom. Facing the challenges of landscape painting reform, he effortlessly introduced new works that combined traditional brush and ink skills with a contemporary spirit, showcasing unique artistic individuality. His creations include landscapes of Taihang, Yanshan, Huangshan, Lijiang, and the Three Gorges, ranging from grand compositions to small pieces, all distinguished from ancient and modern works. His artistry, with its unique charm and aesthetic realm, has been recognized and praised by the art world and society at home and abroad.

Baixue Shi is humble and kind, approachable, and instructs students with dedication, imparting all his knowledge of brushwork, ink, and composition without reservation. He encourages students to learn from various masters without flaunting his skills. He leads by example, taking students for sketching trips to experience and learn from nature. His teaching is rigorous and patient, nurturing a large number of art talents for the nation.
