并列连词and在并列句中可以表示对比、时间，它的语义和翻译在试卷中常常出现。现就其所表达的内涵语义及汉译方法进行归纳。
1.and表示对比。and常用来连接表示截然不同的态度、爱好个性等的意念词、词组和句子，相当于on the contrary、in contrast、while、whereas，可以译成“而，却”，或者不翻译。比如：
Vegetable oil is digestible and animal oil is not.植物油易消化而动物油则不然。Robert is secretive and David is candid.罗伯特守口如瓶，大卫却直言不讳。
Mary is interested in music and Jim is fond of sports.玛丽对音乐感兴趣而吉姆喜欢运动。It will take you four hours to reach the country seat on foot and only one hour by bus.你到县城步行要花四个小时，而坐公共汽车只需一小时。
He fills the ears of his people with wax and suffered them to bind him with cords firmly to mast.他用蜡塞住同伴们的耳朵，而他听任他们用绳子把他紧紧栓在桅杆上。You are a vegetarian and you eat fish.你是素食主义者，可你竟吃鱼。
2.and表示时间。and 表示时间时，相当于and then。and前的分句也作时间状语从句，语义相当于when 或 while+分句结构。and 可译成“当……时”，“一边……一边”。比如：
You can't eat your cake and have it.你不能吃掉蛋糕同时又拥有它。They walked and talked.他们边走边谈。
Mother was reading and I was having a bath.妈妈在读书而我在洗澡。He told me about it and left.他告诉我这件事，后来就走了。
Winter comes, and they wear more clothes of course.冬季来临，他们当然要穿更多的衣服。He yelled for help and the PLA men were al-ready in the court.他刚刚大声呼救，解放军就到院子里来了。
另外，and引起的并列分句有时等于一个非限定性定语从句，该定语从句可引起评论或起到进一步解释说明的作用。比如：
We have arrived at the hotel, and find it very comfortable.(= We have arrived at the hotel which we find very comfortable.)我们到了宾馆，发现那里很舒服。
