大日如来,梵音名号Maha^vairocana,是佛教密宗至高无上的本尊,是密宗最高阶层的佛,为佛教密宗所尊奉最高神明。密宗所有佛和菩萨皆自大日如来所出,在金刚界和胎藏界的两部曼荼罗中,大日如来都是居于中央位置,他统率着全部佛和菩萨,他是佛教密宗世界的根本佛。
大日如来依梵音可译成毗卢遮那佛,“如来”即是“佛”的意思。大日如来名称出现在公元七世纪善无畏三藏翻译的《大日经》里。“大日”是除一切暗遍照宇宙万物,能利养世间一切生物,大日之光为不生不灭。
此尊大日如来结智拳印,该印有无上菩提(最高之觉悟境界)之意;本尊结全跏趺坐于金刚叠涩座仰覆莲台之上,背光为简化的六拏具样式,顶部有塔式相轮伞盖,火焰纹圆形头光;整体呈现稳定的三角形;
在纽约大都会博物馆有一尊艾伦伯格捐赠的大日如来,无论是在尺寸上,样式风格上都几乎一致,由此可见当时大日如来信仰的普遍性和重要性;

Dainichi Tathagata, named Maha^vairocana in Sanskrit, is the supreme deity of Tantric Buddhism, the highest level of Buddha in Tantric Buddhism, and the highest god enshrined in Tantric Buddhism. All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Esoteric Buddhism come from the Great Sun Tathagata. Dainichi Tathagata can be translated into Vairocana Buddha according to the Sanskrit sound, and "Tathagata" means "Buddha". The name of Dainichi Tathagata appeared in the "Darijing" translated by Shanwuwei Sanzang in the seventh century AD. "Great Sun" is to eliminate all darkness and illuminate all things in the universe, and can benefit and nourish all living things in the world. The light of the Great Sun is immortal.
