On the shore we were stamping(跺) our feet on the frozen ground. Soon it would be dark. Then someone had an idea. “If we tie a rope to the handle, maybe when the sledge sticks, we can haul(拖) the boat over the ice.”
There was another dash to the cabin. Two of the men climbed back into the boat. Now there was movement. On a good lob(高举过顶), the sledge would stick fast; pulling on the rope, the men got the boat to slide up on the ice, where the boat's weight caused it to crash through whole yards at a time.
From the shore, we saw the boat break into the opening the deer had made. Now what? Getting a rope around the neck of the panic-stricken(惊慌失措) animal was out of the question.
“Get behind her!” one of us called. With the canoe paddle, the two in the boat gradually herded the terrified creature into the channel opened from the shore.“Hide !” we cautioned one another. “She mustn't see us.” As we faded back among the trees, the animal coasted into the shallows, legs folded beneath her. She could touch bottom easily now and stand.
Instead, she floated slowly to shore and huddled(卷缩) there. We could see her wary(机警的) eyes, her heaving(起伏) sides. Had she broken her legs or gashed(划破) her chest against the sharp-edged ice? Concealed by the trees, not daring to talk and add to her stress, we could only watch in silence.
Slowly the liquid eyes closed. The long, sensitive face drooped(低垂) until the chin was resting on the bank. She wasn't dead, for her eyes would open from time to time, but it was clear to us all that she was dying. Even when the two men brought the boat up to her flanks(侧面) and stepped around her, she did not move.
