很久以前的大厨们身边总会备条湿毯子，用来扑盖火苗以备灭火之需。所以就产生了这样一个习惯说法：throw a wet blanket on 给人当头泼凉水；现在，一条“湿毯子（wet blanket）”用来形容扑灭别人的快乐的人或事。wet blanket不仅用来指人，也可以指事情。
