Fashioned entirely of gold, enamelled and jewel-encrusted throughout, this princely elephant goad was made specifically for exhibition and ceremonial purposes, rather than for use when riding an elephant. The haft is decorated with a spiral pattern of finely worked flowers and foliage in brightly coloured translucent enamel profusely set throughout with table-cut diamonds. The head is formed as an elephant, richly set with rubies.
Ankus popular in India from the 17th to the 19th century, is 37 centimeters long and weighs 590 grams. It was originally an elephant training stinger used to stab animals. By applying pressure to animal skin with pointed tips and hooks, the goal of taming animals is achieved. During battles, this type of weapon is a great hunting weapon. Indian soldiers hold a thorn stick in one hand and a nail hammer in the other. The thorn stick hooks the enemy, and the nail hammer attacks the enemy's head.
