Thomas Mann is one of the greatest German novelists in the 20th century. He wrote The Magic Mountain, the work about humanism of love, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. This novel about an old writer who was enchanted by a boy's beauty and couldn't leave Venice, the city where cholera was prevalent, getting sick to death, is ranked as the masterpiece of Thomas Manns's mid short stories.
