Well, hello there, how are you?
I'm okay, nothing new really happening in my life, everything's just the same, everything's normal… oh my goodness is that an engagement ring? - Yes it is.
- I think it is! - We got engaged, hooray!
Let's get on with the video!
Today we are talking about idioms, I was thinking about some idioms I use all the time because they must be pretty useful to learn right?
So you are about to watch a little sketch from me and my fiance Bez.
Now in this sketch, there will be a lot of common idioms and phrases, see how many you can spot and I will see you afterwards!
I hate first dates, I never know how to break the ice.
You're fine! You're doing great, so tell me about your job, what do you do?
I'm actually a slaughterer, I kill chickens and turkeys for meat, you know, I'm actually so good at my job that… sometimes I… I kill two birds with one stone!
Nice, well that explains the blood stains on your trousers then! - Yeah yeah, of course… So, what are your hobbies?
Well, I've recently started singing actually. - Oh yeah?
Yeah, I've always wanted to take lessons and I thought, better late than never! I've got to get this out of my system.
Well, that's fantastic, so where did you… - I'm quite good actually.
Are you? - Yeah.
Wonderful, well I'm… - Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my Poker Face, she ain't gonna love nobody.
Oh wow… wow that was um… that was… that was loud. - Thank you.
Should we order?
Yes of course, sorry, time flies huh?
Flies… - Right, I think I'm gonna have steak, but the steak comes with tomatoes and I really don't like tomatoes, so what I might do if it comes with tomatoes, I might put them on your plates, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
I'm allergic to tomatoes. - Ooh! Speak of the devil, they've got tomato soup, you can have that!
Good shout.
I was really nervous for tonight, you know, I… I had butterflies all day. - Really?
Yeah, but then I went to the toilet and I felt right as rain after that.
You know, you're being a bit crude.
Oh, sorry, I'm just me, and what you see is what you get, baby.
I don't think this is going to work.
Hey hey, don't leave yet, it ain't over till the fat lady sings!
What did you just call me?
No, no, I didn't mean that… - Goodbye.
Wait, there's something that I need to get off my chest, it's been weighing on my shoulders all evening and I just have to say it. - What?
Do you want to buy any cryptocurrency?
And there you go, how many idioms did you spot?
And do you know what they all mean?
If not, no worries, I'm here to help.
The first common idiom we heard was "to break the ice".
I never know how to break the ice.
If you think, when you meet a new person the atmosphere is normally very cold, almost like there's ice covering everything.
When you break the ice, you do or say something to make the atmosphere a lot more relaxed and warm.
You make the conversation easier, people feel more at ease, you feel like you are with someone you know rather than a stranger: to break the ice.
The next idiom we heard was kind of morbid, but it's kind of a morbid idiom: "to kill two birds with one stone".
我们听到的下一个习语有点阴郁,但它本身就是一个阴郁的习语:“to kill two birds with one stone(一石二鸟)”。
I kill two birds with one stone.
All that means is to accomplish two tasks with one action.
The next one we heard was "better late than never".
Better late than never.
And that means exactly what it sounds like: it's better to do it later rather than never — at least you did it, at least you did it at some point rather than never at all.
Bez finally proposed to me, better late than never!
Bez
And the next one was soon after that, "get it out of my system".
接下来的是紧随其后的“get it out of my system(把它做完)”。
I've got to get this out of my system.
"To get something out of your system" means you have a want to do something, you have a desire to do something, you want to say something, you want to achieve something, and you know you want to do it and you just need to 'ah', just do it!
“get it out of my system”意味着你想做某事,你有做某事的欲望,你想说某事,你想实现某事,你知道你想做这件事,你只需要‘啊’,去做吧!
I just need to do it so that I don't want to do it anymore.
Now I wonder if you heard the next one because it was within a song.
So when Bez was singing, "Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my Poker Face" by Lady Gaga.
Can't read my,can't read my,no he can't read my Poker Face"。
"Poker Face", that's an idiom or phrase.
"Poker Face(面无表情的脸,扑克脸)",这是一个习语或短语。
A "poker face" is a face that you use for poker, no one can tell what your emotions are, you are completely blank.
“Poker Face”
You don't know if I'm happy, if I'm sad, if I'm confused, because I have a great poker face.
Now we don't only use this in the context of Poker, you can use it anytime someone is not revealing their true emotions.
Next up, we had "time flies", which is a shorter version of "time flies when you're having fun".
接下来,我们有“time flies(时光飞逝)”,这是“time flies when you're having fun”的简短版本。
Sorry, time flies, huh?
You will notice that natives rarely say the whole idiom here, they rarely say "time flies when you're having fun", most of the time, they just say "time flies".
你会注意到本地人很少在这里说完整的习语,他们很少说“time flies when you're having fun”,大多数时候,他们只说“time flies”。
And this means time passes quickly when you are having fun.
Then we had "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it".
然后我们有“We'll cross that bridge when we come to it(船到桥头自然直,到时候再说)”。
But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
This means we will handle that problem when we get there.
It's not a problem right now, so don't worry about it.
If it becomes a problem, we will deal with it then, not now.
Next up we had "speak of the devil" or "the goat", I don't know what I'm trying to be here.
接下来我们有“speak of the devil(说曹操,曹操到)”或“the goat”,我不知道我在这里想做什么。
Speak of the devil, they've got tomato soup, you can have that!
This is used when you have just been speaking about someone or something.
You've just been having a conversation about them, and then next thing you know, they arrive or they appear!
So, oh, did you hear that Darren just bought a new house? That's amazing.
Oh, speak of the devil, Darren! He's here!
Speak of the devil.
Next up, we had one that I probably use every single day: "good shout".
Good shout.
This is an alternative to "good idea", and it's extremely common in the UK, possibly in the US, I'm not entirely sure, but definitely in the UK, we will say "good shout" sometimes instead of "good idea", good shout.
Next up we had "to have butterflies".
接下来我们有“to have butterflies(紧张,兴奋)”。
I had butterflies all day.
This is that feeling in your stomach where it feels like it won't stop moving because you're nervous, you're excited, it feels like there are little butterflies in your stomach.
Nervous, excited, that feeling.
Next, we heard "right as rain".
接下来,我们听到了“right as rain(非常好,身体或状况良好)”。
Yeah but then I went to the toilet, and I felt right as rain after that.
"To be right as rain", it means you are healthy, you are happy, nothing is wrong with you, you are normal, you are all good, in perfect health.
“To be right as rain”,
Then we had "what you see is what you get".
然后我们有“What you see is what you get(所见即所得)”。
And what you see is what you get, baby.
That simply means the way I appear is the way I truly am.
I'm not hiding anything, I'm not pretending to be anybody different, if you see someone who is very happy, I truly am very happy What you see is what you get.
Next up we had "it's not over till the fat lady sings", or if you want to be more American — "it ain't over till the fat lady sings".
接下来我们有“it's not over till the fat lady sings(事情还没结束,不要妄下定论)”,或者如果你想更美国化一点——“it ain't over till the fat lady sings”。
It ain't over till the fat lady sings.
This simply means it's not over yet, okay?
There's still time, it is not over until a fat lady sings, so if you hear a fat lady sing, maybe it's over, but it's not done yet, don't give up, we can still do this, there's still time, it's not over yet.
There are two more idioms, stay with me.
"To get something off your chest": There's something that I need to get off my chest.
“To get something off your chest”:
If you "get something off your chest", you finally say something that has been burdening you.
如果你“get something off your chest”,就是指你终于说出了让你感到负担的事情。
Maybe you've been keeping a secret for a long time and it's been stressing you out, it feels like you've got this pressure on your chest and you just want to… Similar to this, we have "it's been weighing on my shoulders".
类似于此,我们有“It's been weighing on my shoulders”。
It's been weighing on my shoulders all evening.
"To have a weight on your shoulders", to carry something on your shoulders, is to have a burden, something that sits here, and you feel like you can't relax because you're carrying this weight of a secret, of a bad thing that you've done, it sits on your shoulders.
“To have a weight on your shoulders”,
And there we go!
How many idioms did you get? Did you get them all?
I hope you did.
