我们知道，英语段落中名词重复相对少见。当同一个名词反复出现时，经常会用替代、省略、同义词和近义词等衔接手段。所以，英语的句子与句子之间的呼应通常是通过词语替代完成的。而汉语段落中，名词的重复现象很多，句子与句子之间通过词语的重复相互呼应，达成段落中的连贯。在英译汉时，为了使译文更加符合译入语的语法规则，在进行英译汉段落翻译时，原文中的替代部分在译文中要使用词语重复的手段。比如：
There is also an informal network of connections that enables a general to call a scientist to get his son admitted to an institute, a scientist to wangle a return draft deferment, or a movie scriptwriter who has produced a good Soviet spy film to call the security services to get permission for his wife and daughter travel to the West.
苏联社会还存在一种无形的关系，凭着这种关系，一位将军可以通过一位科学家，让他的儿子被一所大学录取。作为报答，这位科学家又可以弄到一张缓役证。凭着这种关系，一位有名地反特电影剧本作者可以到保安机关为他的妻子和女儿搞到去西方国家旅行的许可证。
原文用一个复杂长句来表示前苏联社会某种无形的社会关系，而在译文中，我们可以把原句拆译成了三个独立句子：1）There is also an informal network of connections that enables a general to call a scientist to get his son admitted to an institute。 2）a scientist to wangle a return draft deferment。3）or a movie scriptwriter who has produced a good Soviet spy film to call the security services to get permission for his wife and daughter travel to the West。
在两种表现无形社会关系的例子前，我们可以加上“凭着这种关系”，用这种重复的衔接手段突出了文章想要表达的重点。摆脱了原文结构的束缚，变换了句子之间的衔接方法。
