Whereas the first writer has great freedom to write what they desire, a translator is thought to be doubly bound: bound to produce a text that is based more or less on the original, translators' choices of what to say are restricted; and bound by relationships between the languages and cultures involved, translators' choices of how to say it are restricted too.
