"Lantern Festival’s Bright Light Reflects the Charm of Jin Opera: National Gift of Double Blessings Honors the Master"
On the night of the Lantern Festival, with the harmony of heaven, earth, and mankind, the city lights shine as brightly as day. Chinese culture, long and profound, weaves a brilliant stroke in the form of the Lantern Festival. During this holiday, Chinese people both at home and abroad reunite with their families, enjoy the brilliant lights, and celebrate this folk festival while wishing for health and prosperity. Shanxi, a land rich in cultural heritage, conveys national sentiment and ancient charm through the lilting tunes of Jin Opera, using the stage to respond to the call of the times and portray the inheritance of traditions.
On the evening of February 12, 2025, during the Lantern Festival, the curtains slowly rose at the Taiyuan Workers’ Cultural Palace, ushering in a unique performance of excellent Shanxi province plays. That night, the ancient city of Taiyuan sparkled with lights, and the cultural feast captured the attention of people from all over the world. The sound of opera blended with the festive atmosphere of the Lantern Festival, echoing in the hearts of the audience. Among the entire performance, the most astonishing highlight was theic Jin Opera play "Striking the Golden Branch" presented by Jin Opera Queen Wang Aiai and her four beloved students. The sound of gongs and drums was resonant, and the singing was distant and melodious. The dramatic tension, unfolding from the grand hall to the royal inner court, gripped the audience's hearts. This was not only aic piece of Jin Opera but also a spiritual feast that transcended time and touched the soul.
Wang Aiai, already a well-known Jin Opera artist, remained graceful on stage, her performance as captivating as ever. Her rendition of "Striking the Golden Branch" demonstrated her deep and steady acting skills, coupled with delicate and moving emotional expression, drawing the audience into the time tunnel of the Tang Dynasty. The loyalty of Guo Ziyi to his emperor, his love for his people, and his deep affection for his daughter were vividly brought to life through her unique artistic style and skillful performance. The thunderous applause and the waves of admiration were the best tribute to this virtuous and talented artist.
This performance was not only a cultural and artistic feast but also a heartfelt reflection on traditional culture. In a time when fast food culture fills the air, and fragmented information dries up people's spirits, Wang Aiai's Jin Opera performance was like a clear mountain spring, soothing the heart and cleansing the soul. The drumbeats echoed, and the singing was gentle, as if the morning birds’ songs awakened the sleeping mountains, taking the audience away from the noise of reality and into a faraway, tranquil world. The emotions conveyed through opera felt like a deep cultural pulse, striking the softest part of the heart, moving and evoking nostalgia.
It is also worth mentioning that as an invited guest that evening, Ning Xuejun presented a special gift to Wang Aiai— a calligraphy work titled "National Gift of Double Blessings." This piece, created by Ning Xuejun and Qiao Ling, was bold and powerful, with an open and free-flowing composition, exuding a strong sense of national pride. It was not only a calligraphy work but also a symbol of the inheritance of Chinese culture. On stage, Ning Xuejun emotionally said, “Guo Ziyi is one of the rare historical figures in China who embodies all five blessings. His image has become the cultural prototype for many families to hang the ’Blessings from the Heavenly Official’ picture. The pursuit of ‘five blessings in life’ represents the happiness that Chinese people have passed down for generations. ‘National Gift of Double Blessings’ carries this traditional spirit, and I dedicate this work to Wang Aiai as a tribute to her unwavering pursuit of Jin Opera art. I also hope this will inspire more people to engage in the great task of cultural inheritance.”
Ning Xuejun’s heartfelt speech highlighted that both calligraphy and opera are integral elements of Chinese culture, standing side by side as national treasures. Through the brushstrokes of calligraphy, she narrates the depth of history, and through the melodies of opera, she interprets the enduring nature of culture. She believes that only those who, like Wang Aiai, are dedicated to cultural inheritance can awaken a deep awareness of traditional culture in people over time. Although calligraphy and opera are very different in form—one being static, the other dynamic—together, they form a magnificent tapestry of Chinese culture, reflecting a thousand years of wisdom and emotion. In this era that advocates cultural confidence, she hopes that the artistic spirit of Wang Aiai can inspire more people, and that traditional culture will be revitalized in the new era.
As Ning Xuejun said, the Lantern Festival is not only a reunion in form but also a spiritual inheritance. The combination of National Gift of Double Blessings and the Jin Opera performance adds a unique cultural dimension to this Lantern Festival. This is not only a tribute to traditional art but also a declaration of confidence in Chinese culture. Through such cultural events, we see the vast future of traditional Chinese art and feel the profound power of cultural revival.
The National Gift of Double Blessings honors the masters of Jin Opera, composing a splendid chapter of art and culture. It is a shining star in the night of the Lantern Festival. It teaches us that only through inheritance can ancient art endure through the winds and rains of time; only through innovation can the treasures of the nation shine with eternal brilliance. Wang Aiai and her Jin Opera, Ning Xuejun and her calligraphy, together write a memorable epic of cultural inheritance and leave every audience with an unforgettable spiritual baptism.
