We walked a few paces away and held a council(会议) of despair. If she didn't bleed to death first, she would freeze as the night and ice closed in. We were hungry, discouraged, chilled to the bone, but we couldn't leave a dying animal there in the woods.

Suddenly a splashing of water turned every head to the lake. The “dying animal” had sprung to her feet. Astonished, we stared at her in the twilight. She was larger and taller than we had imagined. In three arching(弓状)leaps she was gone, bounding between trees and out of sight before the cheers had left our throats.

We ran to the water's edge and found no trace of blood where the doe had lain--only the spot where the exhausted animal had paused to collect her strength.

Elated(兴高采烈地), frozen feet forgotten, we tramped back to the cabin, singing at the top of our voices. As we walked along,I thought of how we'd set out with no clear plan in mind. Nor could we see ahead now. The deer had escaped to face fresh problems. A hunter could shoot her the next day. She could starve over the winter. It's a complicated world and we don't have all the answers. But that should not stop us from doing all we can.

As we finally sat down to eat, we paused to say grace. “Thank you, Father,” someone prayed, “for giving each of us some small part to play in this complex world.” Our dinner was cold, the pie crust(外皮) burned, but no meal ever tasted so good.
