《月令七十二候集解》说：“大雪，十一月节，至此而雪盛也。”此时节，天气愈发寒冷，降雪的可能性更大。

“大雪”是中国传统二十四节气（the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms）中的第二十一个节气，“大雪”的英文表达是Major Snow。
这是最常用的翻译之一，与“小雪”（Minor Snow）相对应，强调的是节气的重要性和季节的变化。
北京冬奥会、中国气象局、《中国日报》（China Daily）和中国国际电视台（CGTN）都用Major Snow。
除此之外，“大雪节气”还可以译为Great Snow、Greater Snow、Heavy Snow等。
比如《大英百科全书》（Encyclopaedia Britannica）和“维基百科”（Wikipedia）采用的是Heavy Snow。
用英语介绍“大雪”：Major Snow or Daxue, is one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. It usually falls around December 7th each year.

“荔挺”为兰草的一种，也能感受到阳气的萌动而抽出新芽。
